Interview

An exclusive look behind the scenes of Bugatti’s most secret collection

From the mystery of La Voiture Noire and the lost Atlantic to world-record prototypes and the latest Solitaire masterpiece.

Luigi Galli reveals how Bugatti’s past continues to shape its future

Location: Wolfsburg, Germany

Luigi, why does the story of the Bugatti Atlantic still fascinate enthusiasts today?

The Type 57 SC Atlantic is more than just a car; it is one of the greatest mysteries in automotive history. Jean Bugatti’s personal Atlantic disappeared during World War II and, to this day, nobody knows exactly what happened to it. Some believe it was transported by train and never arrived. Others think it may have been hidden away or even transformed into racing cars during difficult times. The fact that no one knows the truth keeps the legend alive.

What makes the La Voiture Noire so special?

La Voiture Noire was created as a modern tribute to the lost Atlantic. Every design element references Bugatti’s heritage, from the central spine running through the bodywork to the signature side line and the iconic horseshoe grille. It was our first true one-off of the modern era and became the foundation for what would later evolve into the Solitaire Programme.

Is La Voiture Noire more than just a design exercise?

Absolutely. The challenge was to translate the elegance and emotion of a 1930s masterpiece into a modern hypercar platform. It combines heritage, craftsmanship, and engineering in a way that had never been done before at Bugatti. It remains a unique icon.

One of the highlights of the collection is the famous Diablo-based prototype. Why is it so important?

Because that is where the Bugatti W16 story truly began. Before the Veyron existed, engineers installed the W16 engine into a Lamborghini Diablo platform to test and validate the concept. It was the first time this extraordinary powertrain was fitted into a running vehicle. Without that prototype, the Veyron might never have happened.

What does the first Veyron prototype tell us about Bugatti’s development process?

It shows how ambitious the project really was. The prototype may look rough today, but it contains the DNA of the production Veyron. Engineers tested it everywhere, from the Arctic Circle to Death Valley. It represents thousands of hours of development and the determination to achieve what many thought was impossible.

The Veyron Super Sport World Record Edition is also part of the collection. Why is this car significant?

This is the actual car that set the world speed record in 2010. Beyond that achievement, it also became a rolling laboratory for future Bugatti projects. Many of the technologies and engineering solutions developed through this car directly influenced the Chiron and future generations of Bugatti hypercars.

Bugatti is often associated with performance. How important is customer experience in the development process?

It is essential. One interesting example is the Chiron door design. During development, feedback from the Bugatti family highlighted that getting in and out of the car should be more elegant and comfortable. Small changes to the signature line and door opening transformed the experience. At Bugatti, performance and usability must always coexist.

What role does the Bugatti Royale play in the brand’s history?

The Royale represents Ettore Bugatti’s vision of ultimate luxury. Only six were built, and each one is a masterpiece. The attention to detail is extraordinary. Even hidden components were designed to be beautiful because Ettore believed every part of a Bugatti should reflect craftsmanship and excellence.

The latest Solitaire project, the F.K.P. Hommage, was recently unveiled. What inspired this car?

The F.K.P. Hommage celebrates Ferdinand Karl Piëch and his vision for Bugatti. It combines the timeless proportions of the Veyron with modern engineering and the 1,600-horsepower powertrain derived from the W16 generation. It demonstrates that great design can remain relevant decades later while embracing new technology and performance.

What is the common thread connecting all these vehicles?

Vision. Whether it is the Atlantic, the Royale, the Veyron, La Voiture Noire, or the F.K.P. Hommage, every Bugatti begins with a bold idea. Our responsibility is to preserve that heritage while continuing to create icons for future generations.

Every Bugatti begins with a vision. Our role is to preserve that heritage while creating the icons of tomorrow.
