INTERVIEW

Belgium doesn't shout about its cars. It drives them.

A conversation with Bernard Van der Elst

Mr. Roadbook

Location: Belgium

In this episode, host Jana Azizi and guest host Nadine Hanfstein are picked up in a Ferrari 250 GT SWB by Bernard van der Elst — better known as Mr. Roadbook, the man behind a series of exclusive driving events and collector experiences. Over a tour through Brussels' collector scene, Bernard makes the case for a very Belgian idea: that the best things in this world are enjoyed in private, not paraded. Here's the conversation.

Bernard, you picked us up in a Ferrari 250 GT SWB. What have you got planned for us in Belgium?

I made a whole schedule so you can discover what Belgium really is — a small country with a lot of hidden gems inside. I promised you a very special car, and this is it: a 250 Short Wheelbase. The only catch is that it's a two-seater, so one of you will have to ride separately into Brussels. Give me a couple of minutes — I'll figure it out.

The interior looks almost minimalist. Walk us through it.

I wouldn't call it basic, because it's far from basic. Just look at the steering wheel, the interior, the shifting gear — everything carries this huge history. It's an honour to even drive this car. And if you look along the side, you can see the racing memories from the days it competed — at Goodwood Revival, for example.

So what's the best part of a car like this?

Starting it. That's the whole thing about the car. It's a three-litre Colombo engine — you warm it up a little, put it in neutral, and then the magic happens. You feel the vibrations in your whole body. It's like a time capsule.

How are things with Mr. Roadbook these days?

Quite well, actually. Over the last couple of years we've created so many cool events worldwide. Belgian people are discreet — we're always a bit "off," never showing off — but we organise the finest, coolest things.

One of those events in Tuscany has become legendary: a three-star Michelin dinner in the middle of nowhere. How did that come about?

A customer came to me and said, "Bernard, can you organise something with Luca — a very special place, but I don't want to see anything." He wanted a Michelin-star dinner in the middle of a field, in the middle of nothing, where he could raise his glass, look around, and see only nature. No cars, no catering, no chef, no kitchen — all of it hidden, the kitchen tucked away behind hay rolls. A nice challenge. We won it, of course.

You keep coming back to Belgian discretion. What does that mean for collectors here?

That we enjoy driving our cars — we don't have to show them. That's the spirit. And it's exactly why a place like Drive City matters: they built something that never existed before, almost a car-community building, and they're genuinely involved with the new generation — organising gatherings and events so young people get to drive these amazing cars too.

We enjoy driving our cars. We don't have to show our cars.
