Some cars become legends. Others disappear and become myths. The story of La Voiture Noire begins long before the modern era of Bugatti and traces its roots back to the legendary Type 57 SC Atlantic. Only four examples were ever built, making it one of the rarest automobiles in history. One of them belonged to Jean Bugatti himself. During the Second World War, the car vanished while being transported from Molsheim to Bordeaux and has never been seen again. To this day, nobody knows what happened to it. That mystery transformed La Voiture Noire into one of the most fascinating stories in the automotive world. For Bugatti, the missing Atlantic represented more than a historic vehicle. It became a symbol of the brand’s heritage and a source of inspiration. In 2019, the idea emerged to create a modern tribute worthy of its legacy - a one-off masterpiece designed to honor the most valuable lost car ever created. Reimagining such an icon required far more than recreating old shapes. The challenge was to capture the spirit of the Atlantic while translating its identity into a modern Bugatti.
Designers carefully reinterpreted the car’s most recognizable elements, from the iconic horseshoe grille to the dramatic centerline running across the entire body. The elongated proportions were inspired by the grand touring character of the original, creating a silhouette unlike any modern Bugatti before it. The result is a car that feels timeless yet unmistakably contemporary. Every surface reflects a balance between heritage and innovation. La Voiture Noire is not a recreation of the past. It is a modern expression of a legend that disappeared decades ago but continues to influence Bugatti’s vision today.
